Penguins iExplore Learning Story - September 2015

>
Learner: Nisita                                                                 Learning Coach: D Wilkes
Learning Area: Literacy and 4Cs                                      Date:  Term 3
Learning Observed
Nisita has been diligently completing her iExplore on teaching others all about penguins.  She has been researching, refining her ideas and creating a helpful presentation for others to use to learn and improve their knowledge about penguins and how they survive in cold climates.  Her iExplore learning adventure stemmed from her curiosity about how the flightless birds survived in Antarctica. Nisita has learned to give credit to her sources of information, how to make slides more visually appealing to an audience and has practiced graphic organizers like a KWL chart to help her organize her thinking.  She is going to present her learning to our group in Week 8.  Nisita has responded to feedback from Learning Coach and learners in our conferencing sessions and is open to ideas.
Evidence of learning

see presentation above
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Nisita has shown she can be collaborative when sharing her research and receiving feedback.  She has demonstrated her capability at researching to answer specific questions- skimming and scanning and pulling our key ideas when summarizing texts.  She has made connections to her prior knowledge and experiences.
Next Learning Steps
  • present to our group
  • write a blog post about your experiences
  • create a quiz using kahoot to check for learning from the focus group
  • put the presentation into your Learning Pathway as a learning artefact and share it with your family

Nisita's Operation Big Science Learning Story

Learners: Shreya, Henry, Louisa, Nisita                              Learning Coach: DWilkes
Learning Area: Science                                                                            Sept: August 2015
Learning Observed
Shreya, Henry, Louisa, Nisita had a blast conducting Operation Big Science in Week 7.  Thanks to the New World kit of ingredients.  Lots of learning resources as well about the Types of Mixtures and Chemical Reactions in Baking.  The learners learned that cooking is scientific fun and that the science capabilities are for life.  After initially watching a short video explaining the difference between chemical and physical changes the learners were challenged to explore their curiosity by examining their materials and to discuss their priori knowledge about the materials and cooking with them.  They had popcorn, nuts, chocolate, sugar, baking soda, glucose and butter.  Then they collaboratively devised an experiment - a cooking experiment, using the ingredients they selected.  First they identified a question and then a hypothesis- making connections to their prior knowledge.  As a group they needed to plan their method too.  During the cooking they made observations- noting what they notice, think and wonder.  Nisita did well working with her group to complete their experiment. She also developed some capability at measuring while completing their recipe.  Their concoction was a success and they shared it with the other learners.  It was collaborative and delicious!

NYLD iMovie Learning Story - August 2015

Learners:  Jessica, Nisita & Karleil                                             Learning Coach: D Wilkes
Learning Area: KCs and Literacy                                                Date: Aug 5
Learning Observed
Jessica, Karleil and Nisita collaborated together to provide a wonderful and inspirational component to the ‘Leadership Experience’ as a long awaited follow up to the NYLD that all the Year 6s attended in Term 2.  The learners co-constructed a presentation and talk about the highlights from the NYLD day (which can be found in the Leadership Experience presentation).  They sparked the curiosity of the crowd with the strong message of leadership.  The learners loved watching the video and most walked away thinking about the leaders who have influenced them.  Practicing their public speaking, writing, presenting and leading was what they did while the audience enjoyed their entertaining iMovie.
Evidence of learning
Sharing the iMovie of NYLD highlights they co-constructed

Sharing what leadership means to them
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
While Jessica, Nisita and Karleil collaborated they made direct and indirect connections to their experience at NYLD and their knowledge of leaders/leadership.  They related to others, managed themselves responsibly and participated enthusiastically on the day.  They were collaborative and responded to changes with resilience.  The preparation for the presentation was great and their short blurbs were a nice finishing touch.
Next Learning Steps
  • add more pictures and sub-titles to the iMovie to make it longer
  • practice your speaking parts more before presenting so we can all hear you and slow down your pace as well
  • write a blog post about the afternoon including your reflections
  • share your learning with family at home
